Cancellara Caught with 400 Meters to Go

[07.10 17:50] Team CSC came close to victory in the final stage of Circuit Franco-Belge, but Fabian Cancellara was caught just 400 meters before the finish line after a great effort by the Swiss rider during the 162-kilometer stage from Cuesmes to Tournai.

"Fabian escaped with about five kilometers left and Stephen De Jongh from Quick Step followed suit. But De Jongh was unwilling to take any leads, because his team had been trying to get Geert Steegmans in position all day. So that was understandable especially since Steegmans ended up winning the stage as well as the overall victory," said Team CSC sports director Scott Sunderland after the race.

Even though he was caught such a short distance before the finish Cancellara did manage to test his legs one last time before the final goal of the season.

"Fabian was really strong and he's in great shape for Paris-Tours there's no doubt about that. Of course he's a bit worn, because it's at the end of the season, but so are his rivals," said Sunderland.

Prior to Cancellara's attack Matthew Goss also made an attempt at the victory, but he and four others were caught on the last climb eight kilometer before the finish.
