Julich Ready to Challenge Armstrong
20.04 08:57

Fresh off his first victory since 1998 at the final time trial stage at the Tour of the Basque Country in early April, Julich is motivated to have a strong race in front of American fans in his first U.S. race since 1996.

"This is a big race for all the Americans; we're all racing against the guy who's won the Tour five times, so we're not going to hand it to him on a silver platter," said Julich at the official press conference on Monday.

Team CSC - already winners this spring of the Tour Mediterranean, Paris-Nice and Criterium International - will be supporting Julich as he hunts for overall victory in the seven stage-six day race over the red hills of the Peach State.

"We are going to be supporting Bobby. He obviously has good form right now and he's motivated," said Team CSC rider Jens Voigt, also a stage winner at the Basque tour as well as the overall winner at Criterium International.

Now in its second year, the Georgia Tour is attracting an all-star field that includes five-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong (US Postal), flamboyant Italian sprinter Mario Cipollini (Domina Vacanze), popular French rider Jacky Durand (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago) and the best American professional racers.

"Anything that happens in Georgia now will be icing on the cake," Julich said. "I'm really looking forward to racing in the United States. It's been so long since I've raced there. I hope to have a good race."
